Kaneohe, Hawaii — March 29, 2011

Officials say a Marine was killed and three more hurt when a helicopter crashed during an emergency landing in Kaneohe Bay, roughly two miles east of Honolulu.

The U.S. Marine Corps reports that the CH-25D Sea Stallion from the Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363 took off around 7 p.m. for a nighttime training mission, but reported distress less than half an hour later. The pilot apparently attempted an emergency landing in the bay, but the chopper tipped onto its side.

Paramedics transported one of the victims to Tripler Army Medical Center, where he died a short time later. Among the three survivors, two sustained critical injuries and remain at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. None of the victims’ names has been released.

The Federal Aviation Administration reports that 268 fatal general aviation crashes occurred in the United States in 2010, resulting in 457 deaths.
